The first classic of the season was run at Newmarket on Saturday and it provided a real shock for punters with a surprise winner as well as a well beaten favourite in the 2,000 Guineas. One punter had a great day as he played the Win Index to great effect. The client sold Adagio, the Stoute trained race favourite, at 17 for £50 as well as buying the eventual winner Cockney Rebel at 5 for £30. Many agreed that the race was not the greatest, but the result certainly made the client smile as Adagio faltered and Cockney Rebel ran very well to become the longest price winner of the race since 1978. These two successful trades combined to make the client a cool £2,200 on the day.

Super League's 'Millennium Magic' experiment was branded a huge success by the organisers. All 12 Super League teams played their round 13 fixtures at Cardiff's Millennium stadium and it threw up some extremely exciting encounters. None more so than in the final match on Sunday evening between Bradford and Leeds. One client bought total points in the game at 51 for £150 and was hoping for a real thriller, and a real thriller he got as the Rhinos snatched a last-gasp win over the Bulls with a try shrouded in controversy. The game was topped off in dramatic style when Leeds' Kevin Sinfield kicked for goal to tie the match but the ball hit the crossbar only for substitute Jordan Tansey, who was clearly offside, to go over in the dying seconds. The client didn't care though, as he reaped even more reward from the 13-try extravaganza to the tune of £4,350.

As Rodney Marsh once said about the Manchester derby... "it's likely to be a cracker or a crapper". Last Saturday saw a 'crapper' as United wrapped up three points in a tense game devoid of any real quality. One punter will certainly be cursing after selling the time of the 2nd match goal at 59 for £8. After Christiano Ronaldo opened the scoring with a 34th minute penalty the client could have expected the game to open up and the net to bulge once more before the 59th minute. But it was not to be as the game went through the motions until, wait, a chance for City to equalise came in the 79th minute and spare the client a further loss. Darius 'Euro 2004' Vassell stepped up to take the penalty, but missed, leaving the client 31 times his stake down, a loss of £248.

The last game of the season always throws up some great surprises but one client was not banking on one in the WBA v Barnsley game at the Hawthorns at the weekend. The Baggies needed just a point to guarantee their place in the play-offs against the already safe Tykes. One client had a go at the Hotshots market and sold £10 at 31 (25 points per goal scored by: Phillips, Ellington, Nerdiello and Ferenczi, 8 points if a named player does not participate). Let's just say that it didn't go well for the punter as Albion blitzed Barnsley 7-0 with a hat-trick from the goal machine that is Kevin Phillips plus a brace from Nathan 'the duke' Ellington. This meant that the market made up a staggering 125 to leave the client's wallet light of £940. Boing Boing B*$%!*ks!

Guinness Premiership Gloucester now set their sights on the Leicester Tigers after they emphatically scalped the fez wearers at Kingsholm. The Cherry and Whites are up 7.5 points to 34-35.5 on our Guinness Premiership Playoff Index.

Premiership Wigan fans cross your fingers. You need your footballers to beat Sheffield Utd and then hope the Hammers are humbled at Old Trafford if you are to survive the dreaded drop. The Latics are up 6 points to 24-26 on our Premiership Relegation Index.

The Playoffs The MK Dons come into the League 2 Playoffs on the back of a four game winning streak and some punters reckon that Martin 'Mad Dog' Allen's team are primed and ready to pounce. They are up half a point to 9.5-11 on our League 2 Playoff Index.

European Football What a difference a few days make? Sevilla were in raptures on Thursday night after successfully clinching their place in the UEFA Cup Final. Three days later their smiles had been replaced by grimaces following their 3-2 league defeat against Real Madrid. Juande Ramos' men are down 6 points to 30-33 on our Primera Liga Championship Index.

Super League 'Millennium Magic' weekend wasn't so enchanting for Hull FC fans. They trekked back from Cardiff with their heads in their hands following their side's 14-10 defeat by arch-rivals Hull KR. Peter Sharp's side are down 9 points to 18-21 on our Super League Outright Index.

For the second week in a row a big 50 shone brightly on the scoreboard involving a match with Salford, but unfortunately for Steve Simm's men it was located on the opposition's side once again. The Red's are up 9 points to 32-35 on our Super League Bottom 3 Index following their mauling by Warrington.

Politics Fed up of Tony Blair and David Cameron going at it hammer and tongs across the floor of the House? Why not take an interest in Irish politics instead? (The Irish General Election takes place later this month). Michael McDowell's Progressive Democrats have come in for a little support. Their seats are up a quarter of a point to 4-4.5.
