Getting involved in Player Try Minutes during any rugby match can really up the excitement of watching a game. But to get involved in a match featuring New Zealand almost blows it through the roof! One client may have had the two best punts of his life on Saturday in the All Black’s pool opener against Italy when he bought the try minutes of pin up boy Dougie Howlett (at 63) and man mountain Jerry Collins (at 6) for £5 and £10 respectively. How great it must have been for our man to see both of his men go over five times in total. Howlett scored a dynamic hat-trick in the 12th, 56th and 59th minutes and Collins, a rare try scorer, touched down in the 68th and 70th to bring home a profit of £1,640 for the client – just enough to fix the hole in the ceiling!

The England football team (also now known as the Gareth Barry show) proved this week that it’s not always the best players who win you games, it’s the best team. One punter would've been compelled to hug and kiss Steve ‘smug smile’ McClaren after a buy of England, with a -2 goal disadvantage, on our handicap Win Index at 6.5 for £500 (yes, you can do handicap bets on spreads). With a nice shape, some hard working players and only a sprinkling of superstars, England played with the air of a team that had been together for years as opposed to being England’s first unchanged line-up since well before McClaren took charge. Rio Ferdinand’s lovely shuffle and strike in the 84th minute meant that the client got the result he was looking for, as the market made up the full 25 points to bank him a massive £9,250!

Echoes of Senegal’s victory against France in the 1998 Football World Cup must have sprung to the mind of the 80,000 strong crowd in the Stade de France late on Friday night. The opening game against Argentina did not go to plan, not only for the hosts, but also for one client who sold the time of the first French try at 28 for £25. Les Bleus looked nervous and apprehensive only mustering four penalties and, most importantly for our man, no tries against the Pumas. In time of first try bets no tries always means for a make-up of 80 and in this case a £1,300 loss for the punter, who could only take solace in coach Bernard Laporte’s typically Gallic post match comments: "When you begin a World Cup and it is imperative to win the match and you lose, you can say only one thing that the sky has fallen in on your head."

Lucky enough for Australia this particular cricketing result may get diluted amongst other current sporting results, but it still won’t make their defeat to Zimbabwe in the World Twenty20 any less shocking. One client, after seeing the Aussies win the toss, bought their runs at 214 for £70. A stat our man might not have been aware of is that the Australian team has not played since their victory in the Cricket World Cup. This certainly showed as only four batsmen managed to creep into double figures as the green and gold stumbled to a total of 138. Although plenty of credit must go to the Zimbos, who were clearly up for it and produced some dogged and, at times, superb fielding which caught out the world's best team and cut a £5,320 hole in the pocket of our man.

Rugby World Cup England had their doubters before the World Cup kicked off and their spluttering display against the USA hasn’t eased the pressure on Brian Ashton. The defending champions are down seven points to 31-34 on our World Cup Outright Index.

New Zealand caught the Italians cold when Ritchie McCaw touched down after just 65 seconds of their Pool C encounter in Marseille last Saturday. Are there more fast starts in store over the coming weeks? Our Quickest Tournament Try (in seconds) market is down 10 points to 50-53.

The Irish were expected to run riot against Namibia, but Eddie O’Sullivan’s Shamrock Army never got out of third gear last Sunday. Ireland Tournament Points are down 55 points to 145-152 following their opening 32-17 victory.

NFL Chicago reached the Super Bowl for the first time in 21 years last February. They’ve got another long wait if their Week 1 performance was anything to go by (they lost 14-3 at San Diego). The Bears are down five points to 29-33 on our Super Bowl Outright Index.

The Wade Phillips era at Dallas has started with a bang. The Cowboys outgunned the NY Giants 45-35 in a Texan thriller on Sunday and they’re up three points to 31-34 on our NFC East Divisional Index.
