| With the conclusion of golf's fourth and final major of the year last weekend some might think that that's it on the professional golf scene for this season. You would then be forgetting The Ryder Cup which takes place next month in Kentucky. But the dramatic final round of the US PGA on Sunday did bring an end to our 2008 Golf Major Performance market which was predictably dominated by just one man (but not the one you think). One client, back in February, bought Padraig Harrington's performance at 44 for £250 (market awards 50pts per major victory, 2nd-10th = 25, 11th-20th = 10, 21st-30th = 5, miss cut = -5). The Irishman got off to a great start finishing fifth at Augusta, despite a wobbly opening round, Harrington was only six shots behind winner Trevor Immelman, to lock in 25 points. Then, after a quiet US Open, iPod proceeded to blow the golfing world away taking The Open and the US PGA from a Tiger-less major field. The second of which was probably the most outstanding with Harrington finishing 66, 66 to beat 54-hole leader Ben Curtis and perennial Nigel Reo-Coker, Sergio Garcia. 50 points for both these victories meant that Harrington's total for the year made-up 125 which meant our man trousered a bank manager welcoming £20,250. |

Continuing the theme of long term markets settling, this week also saw the proverbial nightmare for one punter after a rueful decision at the start of the Test series between England and South Africa. The client decided to buy the series runs of all-rounder (quite literally these days) Jacques Kallis in the four Test series moving in at 380 for £50. The South African had what is known in the common lands as a Regi Blinker as he struggled to find any real form with the bat. In a series that his team won fairly comfortably Kallis was only able to raise his willow once, after a knock of 64 in the third Test at Edgbaston. Other than that scores of 7,13,4,5,2, and 9 would have done little for our man who would have expected the rotund player with a Test batting average of 55 to make more runs than the 104 that he did on this tour. This meant that the poor punter wallet was relieved of a few pennies, 1,380,000 of them!

Premier League Are off-the-field problems going to wreck Man City's season? Mark Hughes has reassured fans that he's going nowhere (for now), but that hasn't convinced some punters. Our Blues' season points quote is down three to 52-53.5.
Do you remember the 7-4 humdinger between Portsmouth and Reading or the 8-1 end-of-season hiding Man City received at the Riverside? Will we witness some thrillers this season too? Our Premier League season special 'Going For Goals' is up 10 to 390-410.
Big Brother (Yes it’s still going). Is the 'Cookie Power' movement running out of steam in the Big Brother house? Kathreya’s popularity appears to be. The massage therapist from Kent is down four to 16-19 on our Big Brother Outright Index.
Mildly interesting / useless sporting fact
Just to make the client in the bad trade column feel even worse Jacques Kallis' prowess with the bat is unquestioned (apart from when he comes to England it seems). He's one of only four people to make a century in four consecutive Test matches on two different occasions.
