How about that for revenge? Northampton Saints put on 45 to smash Castres, while Harlequins beat Toulouse 31-24 in their own back yard. That makes the answer to last week's question - how many would the two English clubs score between them? - 76 points. Mr KB was bang on, and will receive a £200 Total Goals bet before a fat man drops through his chimney.
Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat, please put a few quid in my spread betting account. For this festive edition of the Mole, or 'Mo-el' as I've just decided to call it, I'm giving away five £100 Total Goals bets to the five closest answers this week. The question is this: how many Premier League goals will there be on Boxing Day? Email me at themole@sportingindex.com before 1pm on Monday.
Darts at Christmas. Like football at 3pm on a cold Saturday afternoon, or Swindon Town in League Two, it just feels right. The PDC World Championships has been enjoyable so far, but there was a feeling that the tournament needed a proper underdog story, someone that the tabloids and the neutrals at Ally Pally could get behind. That someone turned out to be vindaloo-loving brickie James Richardson, who beat no. 8 seed Raymond Van Barneveld. One punter decided to buy Richardson/Van Barneveld Set Supremacy at 7 for £220, where 10pts are awarded to the winner plus 3pts per set won by. Despite Barney winning the first two legs, Richardson threw a couple of 145 checkouts on his way to a 3-0 victory. That produced a make-up of 19, and a £2640 profit. Good darts!
'Green Bay sent Packing' is what my headline would have read if I was covering NFL for a national newspaper rather than rambling on about a niche form of gambling once a week. It would refer to Kansas City Chiefs' victory over the Super Bowl XLV winners (that's the most recent one in case you were wondering). The Packers were previously unbeaten this season and had a win streak stretching 19 games. So you won't be surprised to learn that quite a few people sided with them and bought their Supremacy at 12 at kick-off, subsequently losing a fair bit of wedge. Quarterback Kyle Orton completed 23 passes for 299 yards in his first ever start for the Chiefs, helping his side to a shock 19-14 victory. Pity the punter who went long on the Packers for £150 and lost £2550.
Golden Boot Index
After 5 games of the Premier League it seemed like the season was effectively over for Arsenal. Winning just one game while conceding 14 goals in the process left them languishing near the bottom of the table. Hopes of a top 4 finish were fading fast and Robin Van Persie was being left behind in the race for the Golden Boot. Rooney had bagged back to back hat tricks while Aguero was keeping pace with 8 goals in his first 5 appearances. Van Persie only had one goal to his name and was quoted as low as 15-18 on the ‘Premier League Golden Boot' Index. Since then, Van Persie has led an Arsenal revival – scoring 14 goals in the last 11 matches to propel them back into the top 5. Although Champions League qualification is probably the best Arsenal can hope for this season, Van Persie is a clear favourite to claim the Golden Boot – now quoted at 44-47 followed by Rooney and Aguero at 35-38 and 32-35 respectively.
