No matter what is going on, English sport seems to feel a whole lot better when the cricket team wins a series. To be fair it doesn't happen that often so we have to make the most of it when it does, but the boys did themselves proud in the deciding Test in Napier at the weekend. One punter took a real gamble in England's second innings and bought the runs of England's most out of form player, Andrew Strauss, at 32 for £75. A ballsy bet when you consider that Strauss had averaged just over 19 in the series before England’s final innings. Opener Vaughan departed in the very first over after a horrendous top edge to McCullum. This meant an early appearance for the Middlesex man but it didn't seem to bother him as he dug in like a demented mole to frustrate the Kiwi attack and record his highest ever Test score. Strauss' 177, his first century since July 2006, could not have been better timed and ensured some sleepless nights for our cricket traders who had to shell out £10,875.
