The only thing that could appease the soaking that I and most of the country got this holiday weekend was seeing our heroes return from the Far East on that golden nosed jet. And what heroes they are, all of them. Genuine people concentrating on sports that they know will never become mainstream. They don't do it to become famous or rich (although they wouldn't say no to a bit of cash), they do it because they want the tangible feeling of being the best at what they do.

The sporting world is a lot poorer without the Olympics. How refreshing it was to see these sportsmen and women genuinely happy about achieving something. Literally cursing on live TV because they are so *$%@!?£ happy! Makes listening to those media trained, overpaid, underachievers in those main stream sports a whole lot harder.

Yours in sport

I loved the Olympics (as you can tell from above). An occasional two weeks in your life when you're exposed to sports you know very little about and, in the case of this Olympiad, two weeks when Britain excelled at some of those sports you know very little about. One patriot had a thrilling fortnight after buying our GB & N.I Medal Performance at 102 for £350 (5pts per gold, 3pts per silver, 1pts per bronze). From Nicole Cooke’s fabulous gold in the cycling road race two days into the competition, to the men’s coxless four's amazing late surge to overtake Australia six days later, our man must have known that he might be in for some serious profit. Throw in the lovely Rebecca Adlington's two stunning swims (one won by the length of her fingernail) and the pure toughness of James Degale to beat a Cuban nut job and the client could enjoy the sight of seeing 19 golds (95), 13 silvers (39) and 15 bronze medals draped around our heroes' Gregory Pecks. This gave the market a final make-up of 149 and left the punter 205,699.71 Chinese Yaun richer (£16,450).

Not a good week for South African sport and one client in particular as both the rugby and cricket teams were rapturously booed after suffering humiliating defeats in the space of four days. One client may well have added his voice to those uncomfortable choruses after buying Springbok Multi-Points against Australia at 195 for £15 AS WELL AS buying the Proteas' runs in the second ODI against England at 272 for £15. On Saturday morning the rugby team slipped out of contention for the Tri-Nations after suffering a 27-15 loss against the Wallabies in Durban, with Victor Matfield's men failing to score a point in the first-half which meant the multi-point market made-up zero, regardless of what happened in the second-half. Then, even more dramatically, the real shock of the week occurred as Stuart Broad finally took some wickets to decapitate the South African top-order. The visitors' total of 83, their shortest ever one-day innings, meant that our man lost over 81,374 South African Rand (ok, that’s £5,760).

Premier League We're only two games in and Spurs' supporters are already tearing their hair out. When will the Lilywhites finally notch their first league win? Our Tottenham ‘Stop At A Win’ quote has shot up 24 to 45-48 (10pts per game played until they win their first league match).

NFL Have you been stacking up the Buds in the fridge? The new NFL season is now less than a week away!! Minnesota haven’t reached the Super Bowl for 32yrs, but that hasn’t stopped punters getting on board the Vikings’ bus recently. Brad Childress’ charges are up two to 24-28 on our Super Bowl Outright Index.

Formula One Felipe Massa claimed pole, the fastest lap and the race victory in Valencia. Will Ferrari's Brazilian star maintain his momentum? His season points quote is up seven to 99-102.

Mildly interesting / useless sporting fact

The success of Mansfield's greatest ever resident, Rebecca Adlington, will be measured when The Sherwood Swimming Baths, where she learnt to swim, is to be renamed the Rebecca Adlington Swimming Centre in order to promote her young, fit and successful image to the greater public. But don’t fear they’ve evened out this goodness by also naming the local Yates pub the Adlington Arms. So if that swimming lark is a bit too much for you, get in the Adlington and have a pint.
