Just when you thought that the Test series against New Zealand couldn’t get any more exciting than a night out with Geoffrey Boycott, the great game goes and produces a thrilling end to the second Test at Old Trafford. England were out on their feet after collapsing for 202 all out in their first innings, conceding a lead of 179 and after lunch, with the Black Caps 50-1, one optimistic member of a very barmy army decided to buy England on the Win Index at 5.5 for £500, with the best he could surely hope for being the draw (which would have got him 10 points). The Kiwis looked firmly in control until Monty Panesar got to work. The over-enthused spin king took the next five wickets for just 46 runs to put New Zealand in real trouble. They were knocked over for just 114 but England still had to post an Old Trafford record of 294 to snatch victory. With the new price of England’s Win Index trading at around 9.5-10.5 it really was anyone’s Test, but up stepped the maligned figure of Andrew Strauss to bring home the bacon. His composed 106 ensured England reached the record score off the last ball before Tea. Wild celebrations for England and a certain member of the very barmy army, who scooped a £9,750 profit.

The second Bank Holiday in May always provides a nice bed for the three Football League Playoffs. This year both the Championship and League One affairs were tight with just a solitary goal in each game enough to clinch glory. This left just the League Two Playoff between Stockport and Rochdale and one punter thought that this game would follow the same route. He sold the Goal Scorers’ Shirt Numbers in the match at 33 for £300 obviously thinking that the pressure in these matches doesn’t make for much goalmouth action. Unfortunately the client’s better judgement escaped him as this match turned out to be the pick of the triple header. Stockport came from behind to beat local rivals Rochdale 3-2 in what was a quite thrilling contest. To the disappointment of our man four of the five scorer’s shirts went into double figures as McArdle (23), Stanton o.g. (4), Pilkington (17), Dickenson (20) and Rundle (11) bringing the total to a FD hand rubbing 75, which meant for a loss of £12,600.

Euro 2008 As we mentioned last week Portugal are proving popular for the Euro Championships, but not so the French. The 2000 winners, who bowed out in the Q-Finals four years ago are down two to 33-36 on our Euro 2008 Outright Index.

The Greeks stunned Europe when lifting the Henri Delaunay Trophy on Portuguese soil in 2004. Defence was key to their success and punters aren’t expecting them to go goal crazy four years on. Our Greek team tournament goals quote is down 0.2 to 3.4-3.8.

Super League Chants of “Cullen out” rang round the Halliwell Jones Stadium after the shock defeat against Cas on Monday. The crowd got their wish the very next day as Paul Cullen was shown the door. Now the Wire are down four to 14-16 on our Super League Outright Index.

Mildly interesting / useless sporting fact

When Monty Panesar trapped his boyhood hero Sachin Tendulkar lbw in Nagpur in 2006 to claim his first Test wicket, the batting legend later signed and presented the ball to Monty with the words “that will never happen again”. I'm sure we’ll see when England tour India again in October …
